brake pedal issues

I noticed the brake pedal felt spongy this morning, and I had to press it way further down than usual to stop. It's a bit scary when the resistance just isn't there, especially at intersections. I'm thinking there might be air in the lines or a slow leak, but I really need to get it checked before I drive anywhere else.
